CRI (Color Rendering Index) is a 0–100 scale that describes how accurately a light source reveals the true colors of objects, compared with how those same objects look under natural daylight or an ideal reference light. A higher number means colors look closer to how they actually are — a lower number means colors can look shifted, dull, or off.
Every light bulb and LED fixture is rated on this scale, but the number on a spec sheet doesn't always tell the full story. This guide explains what CRI actually measures, what the numbers mean in practice, and where the scale falls short.
What Does CRI Actually Measure?
CRI compares a light source against a reference illuminant of the same color temperature — daylight for cooler sources, an incandescent-like blackbody curve for warmer ones. Under both light sources, eight standard test colors (mostly muted mid-tones — a light greyish red, a dark yellow-green, a light blue, and so on) are compared. The average of how closely those eight colors match under the test source versus the reference is the number most datasheets simply call CRI — more precisely, CRI Ra.
A perfect match to the reference scores 100. Real light sources score lower depending on how far their spectrum departs from that reference.
The CRI Scale — What the Numbers Mean
- Below 80 — noticeable color distortion. Rare in modern LED products, but common in older or very cheap fixtures.
- 80–89 — acceptable for basic general lighting: parking lots, warehouses, hallways.
- 90–94 — generally considered "high CRI." Good for retail, offices, and most residential spaces.
- 95–97 — premium architectural lighting: hospitality, high-end retail, galleries.
- 98+ — near-reference color accuracy, used where color judgment matters most: museums, color-critical retail, fine art, film and photography lighting.
Why It Matters in Practice
A low-CRI light source can make skin tones look sallow, food look unappetizing, wood and stone look flat, and merchandise colors look inaccurate — problems a shopper, a diner, or a museum visitor notices even without knowing why. This is why CRI became a standard spec for architectural, hospitality, and retail lighting, not just a technical footnote.
The Catch: CRI Alone Doesn't Tell the Whole Story
Two light sources can share the exact same CRI Ra number and still render colors differently — because CRI Ra is an average of only eight muted test colors, and it doesn't include saturated red, which is exactly the range human vision is most sensitive to. A separate measurement, R9, scores a source specifically on saturated red — and a light source can have a high Ra while scoring poorly on R9. That gap shows up on skin tones and anything with red or warm undertones.
A newer method, TM-30, was developed by the IES specifically to address CRI's blind spots — it evaluates 99 color samples instead of 8, and reports both fidelity (Rf) and gamut/saturation (Rg) as separate numbers. It's increasingly the more complete spec to ask for in professional lighting design.
